We are very proud to have sponsored the Basica de Barrabas School in Puerto Plata, The Dominican Republic.
The Sponsorship deal came about whilst Todd McQuilkin, our MD and his wife Jay were on honeymoon in The Dominican Republic in May and went on a day trip to visit one of the local Schools in Peurto Plata.
Basica de Barrabas School provides state education for around 100 children aged from 5 to 14 and operates on very limited resources in extremely cramped conditions. The School has only three small classrooms where classes are doubled up and children are taught back to back by a single teacher.
The School receives limited funding from the Dominican Government and is dependent on sponsorship and donations in order to survive so that it can continue to provide an education for it’s under privileged students.
The Dominican Republic is part of the island of Hispaniola which is shared with neighbouring country Haiti, the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere.
Haiti was decimated by the catastrophic earthquake of 2010 which affected an estimated 3 million people. The Haitian government reported that an estimated 316,000 people died, 300,000 were injured and 1 million were made homeless.
Since the disaster The Dominican Republic has experienced a large influx of immigration from the Haitian side of the island with people fleeing the devastation to seek a better life.
This has meant that the Dominican Government has been financially stretched due to the increased population and humanitarian aid needed to cope since the catastrophe. This has led to increased poverty levels with no financial assistance for less privileged families and minimal funding for Schooling.
On their initial visit to the School Todd and Jay were extremely moved by the cramped conditions and poverty that the School children had to endure to receive an education and wanted to do something positive to help.
They arranged a second visit before they left the island and met up with Liborio Sandoval the School Principal. After discussing the best way to help with the Schools financial hardship it was agreed that Air-IT would donate a range of basic materials to assist the children with their learning. This included a variety of note books, pens and bags. Air-IT is in the process of arranging the first shipment of these materials.
It was also identified that one of the major obstacles for children not attending the School was because they could not afford a School uniform which is mandatory by Dominican law. Further plans are in place by Air-IT for the sponsorship and funding of additional School uniforms for these underprivileged children.
Air-IT is keeping in regular contact with the Principal of Basica de Barrabas School and will provide further updates in subsequent newsletters about our on-going support and their future progress.
We feel extremely privileged to be able to assist those less fortunate than ourselves. As a company we are very proud to be able to contribute towards helping these children attend School and provide some of the most basic materials so that they can receive an education and better start to their lives.
Should you wish to make a donation towards Basica de Barrabas School, then please contact Air-IT and we will make the necessary arrangements to implement this with the School Principal.
