We are extremely pleased to have sponsored Penny McQuilkin, of IM Consult, who completed the 2012 Robin Hood Half Marathon on September 30th.
Penny very admirably entered the event to raise funds for the Retford Riding for the Disabled Group where she has worked as a volunteer for the past 8 years. This was her first competitive race since only taking up running in February of this year.
The Retford Group is part of the RDA (riding for the disabled) which is a UK based charity that operates a network of 500 volunteer groups throughout the country providing riding lessons and activities for up to 28,000 people each year.
The Retford & District RDA Group was formed in 1985 and meet at the Wellow Park Stables each Thursday evening. The group helps local children and young adults with a wide range of physical disabilities and special educational needs to experience the joy of riding and rely solely on voluntary help and donations to fund their weekly sessions.
The Robin Hood running event is now in its 32nd year with this year’s half marathon taking place over a new scenic route through some of Nottingham’s most famous landmarks including Trent Bridge, the University of Nottingham grounds and along the banks of the River Trent.
Starting the race on Victoria Embankment in the pouring rain with of over 8,000 other runners, Penny managed to run the entire 13.1 mile route without walking or stopping. Cheered on by over 10,000 spectators along the way, Penny was overtaken by a Wolf, at least 2 bananas and numerous Robin Hoods.
Penny completed the course in a respectable 2 hours 22 minutes and 55 seconds – a fantastic achievement for a first time run and was only narrowly beaten by the eventual winner Kenyan, Luka Rotich who finished in 1 hour 1 minute and 39 seconds!
Sandra Green, Secretary of the Retford RDA group said:
“What a wonderful volunteer we at RDA have in Penny. To put herself through all the training in the wind, rain and sun to raise money for our Group by entering and completing the Robin Hood Half Marathon is incredible.
We have to thank you for sponsoring her so generously. The amazing amount of money she has raised will help towards continuing the fun and benefits our group of riders enjoy on their weekly sessions with their ponies and horses.”
Due to Penny’s valiant fundraising efforts and thanks to Air-IT and other sponsors more that £1,000 was raised which will help to safeguard the future of the Retford & District RDA Group.
Air-IT were very pleased to support such a noble and worthy cause which will help the Group to continue the fantastic work that they do.
