About the Nottinghamshire Cyber Protect Conference

The Nottinghamshire Cyber Protect Conference was the first event of its kind to take place in Nottingham.

It was organised and ran by Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) Paddy Tipping, demonstrating his key pledge to tackle the increased risk of cyber-crime and online fraud.

The event aimed to attract local SMEs to develop knowledge, understanding and awareness of cyber-crime.

The Cyber Landscape Explained

There were a number of engaging keynote speakers throughout the day. Collectively, they explored a number of related issues from the current cyber landscape to social engineering.

Types of ransomware were also explained, and the importance of basic staff training was stressed. Please see our recent blog about staff and user awareness, and examples of some recent types of ransomware below.

Employee Awareness Is Key to Cyber Protection Article

The new General Data Protection Regulation was also discussed, which will introduce compulsory reporting and cyber-breach penalties to the UK from May 2018.

There was also a live hack demonstration, and chance for delegates to speak with any exhibitors in attendance.

With a prime spot next to the main stage, Air-IT were able to discuss and explain our managed security services in more detail and explain how we can help local businesses protect their systems from threats.

Laura Saxton, Marketing Manager at Air-IT said:

As members of the local business community, we were delighted to support this flagship event and to share our well established views on the subject of cyber-security and technology.

With so many in attendance, it’s clear the importance of this issue is now being recognised. This is great news and a step in the right direction for businesses to empower themselves and limit the risk of this growing worldwide threat.

Key messages for delegates to take away from the conference were:

  • Nobody is immune from cyber-threats
  • Can never be 100% protected from attacks due to evolving threats
  • User training and awareness is central to tackling the issue
  • Business-grade IT security solutions must be deployed (businesses should not rely on consumer products)
  • Backup and continuity is vital to recovering from attack
