The outbreak of Covid-19 has changed the way we all work with an unprecedented number of people now working remotely for the foreseeable future. But whilst remote working has enabled businesses to maintain productivity and vital operations, this has also attracted new threats from opportunistic cybercriminals.
With systems and networks being used in new ways that they were not originally designed for, and staff detached from standard workplace protocols, hackers know this makes businesses more vulnerable and easier to exploit.
Despite what you may think, cyber-attacks don’t always have to be sophisticated to succeed. Cyber criminals use covert tactics to gain user credentials and other sensitive information which can be stolen through phishing emails and third-party data breaches. This information is often trafficked and sold on the Dark Web without you or your employees ever knowing about it. Since many people reuse the same passwords across multiple accounts, this makes it even simpler for hackers to get into your network and access your valuable data and assets.
According to the UK Government’s Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2020, 46% of all businesses and 68% of medium sized businesses (50 – 249 employees) reported a cyber security breach or attack within the last 12 months, with 32% of all businesses experiencing issues at least once a week. Meanwhile Microsoft’s ‘Digital Defense Report’ published September 2020 found that cyber criminals are increasingly using identity-based data harvesting attacks to target businesses – with an alarming 73% of organisations encountering sensitive data leaks in the last year.
