About Shine and ‘This is Me’
Shine, which stands for Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus Information, Networking and Equality, was set up in 1996 to help support people living with spina bifida, hydrocephalus and related conditions.
This year’s balloon race was held to raise funds for Shine’s ‘This Is Me’ club, which the charity set up for teenagers in March 2013 after surveying its teenage members and finding that they felt isolated and alone. The club now has over 800 members and has been very successful in bringing teenagers together to share their individual experiences and offer support to each other.
Funding for the ‘This is Me’ club was initially gained through the Roald Dahl foundation and monies raised from the 2014 balloon race will help make sure the club can continue to help more teenagers in the future.
The Balloon Race
The race was held over a period of 8 days during October and started from Sydney in Australia. After having fun with designing and modifying our three balloons online, we waved them off in the general direction of Tasmania.
Sadly, none of them did very well – racking up 152, 211 and 223 miles respectively – but we enjoyed keeping track of the Air-IT fleet as it flew over a number of Google Earth landmarks.
Ultimately, the race was won by Jane Churchill Interiors of London, whose balloon travelled an amazing 395 miles from Sydney to the Tasman Sea. Well done and we hope you enjoy your champagne prize!
Air-IT’s Marketing Director, Paul Judge, commented:
‘It was a real pleasure to support Shine again in 2014. The charity works so hard to support people of all ages who are affected by spina bifida and hydrocephalus, whether they suffer from these conditions themselves or act as carers.
Teenagers in either situation need support, and everyone at Air-IT is proud to be helping provide this through our sponsorship of the ‘This is Me’ balloon race.’
