Microsoft Office 2010 will reach its end of life on 13th October 2020. With all the added pressures of working in the new normal, now is the time to upgrade to Microsoft 365 – before support disappears.

Microsoft Office 2010 is no longer supported - switch to Office 365

Even prior to the pandemic, businesses have relied heavily on the automatic software and security updates of the Microsoft Office Suite. We’re sure that, for many, that dependency has never been more so than over the past few months. But Microsoft Office 2010 is now more of a hindrance than a help.

Microsoft Office has grown and developed to meet the changing needs of personal and commercial users. Microsoft Office 2010 has progressively fallen short of the needs of businesses, and became both a performance and security vulnerability for your business from 13th October 2020.

What happens to Office 2010 as of 13th October?

When Office 2010 reached end of life, Microsoft stopped providing technical support for it. This means no bug fixes and no security updates for any vulnerabilities that may develop in the software. Without security updates that help to protect your systems and team, you’ll be vulnerable to harmful viruses, spyware and other malicious software.

Office 2010 will also stop evolving – you’ll no longer receive upgrades to functionality, and there will be no further updates to support content.

Microsoft 365 (formerly known as Office 365), on the other hand, will continue to evolve and can serve as an important aspect of your overall IT security. Not only that, but it’s worth mentioning that it has provided many with valuable continuity and resilience during the pandemic – not least for its inclusion of Microsoft Teams!

How does Microsoft 365 suit ‘modern working’?

As a cloud-based service, Microsoft 365 offers the flexibility and security many now need. It comprises applications such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive, SharePoint and Teams.

You can use Microsoft 365 from anywhere on any device – yes, any device. And whether you’re accessing Office 365 by PC, Mac, tablet or phone, because it’s powered by the cloud, all applications are always up-to-date. You can access and work on files in just about any situation – it doesn’t get more flexible than that!

By way of a side note, Microsoft has recently changed its naming convention for what we all knew as Microsoft Office 365. This relates specifically to their offering for small to medium-sized businesses, for which the Office 365 Business Plans will now be known as Microsoft 365. Whilst there are also multiple Microsoft 365 products, our preferred solution is Microsoft 365 Business Premium due to its enhanced productivity and security features

What else does Microsoft 365 have to offer?

It’s familiar and intuitive, and provides a range of great benefits:

  • Cost management – With rolling monthly contracts, the subscription model makes it easy to monitor your costs as well as add or remove user licences as you need.
  • Working together – Microsoft 365 facilitates collaboration. Applications, such as Teams, allow multiple users to communicate and work on the same documents simultaneously.
  • Security – Cloud computing with Microsoft offers increased security, using cutting-edge features such as encryption, data loss prevention and advanced security protection from malware and spam.
